This week, 19 – 25 February, is Student Volunteering Week, an annual event that celebrates the contribution of student volunteers. We would like to thank all our student volunteers, past and present, for their contribution to our work.
Volunteering with Citizens Advice Merton & Lambeth is a great way to get vital experience, increase your knowledge, and help people in your community at the same time. You will learn first-hand about some of the issues relevant to many courses, as well as to hone your professional skills. You’ll learn about issues such as housing, debt, problems with benefits and employment, and about our research and campaigns work. You’ll also learn the essential skills employers are looking for: interview skills, customer service, research, skills for working with people, IT and problem solving.
Citizens Advice Merton & Lambeth has been supported by many student volunteers, studying law, social sciences, languages and many other subjects.
One of our volunteers, Zaynab, who is also an undergraduate at City Law School told us: “I’ve been volunteering for around 6 months now, one day per week. The training and support have been great. I am able to take breaks when I need to for my studies. I’m working with people every time I volunteer, talking to them about their problems and finding information for them”.
“I’m learning lots about law and the problems affecting people, and I am getting lots of experience for my CV. I work with a variety of different people I can learn from as well as being provided with a number of opportunities to put what I have learnt into practice. I really enjoy helping people and volunteering here is something I would really recommend”
We’ve opportunities to volunteer that can be fitted in to your course requirements, and we can be flexible to meet your needs. Most of our volunteers are with us for one day per week or more, but if you can spare 4-5 hours on a weekday we should be able to find something for you.
You can take a break for exams and coursework. If you want to volunteer with us during term-time only, or during the holidays only, that’s fine.
