Community Engagement Volunteers

Citizens Advice Merton and Lambeth (CAML) is the leading advice charity supporting individuals and families across the London boroughs of Lambeth and Merton.  We provide a range of information, support and advice services.  We also work to raise awareness and understanding of the challenging issues affecting our clients and communities.

We were one of the first Citizens Advice services to open our doors in 1939. More than 80 years on, our support and services are as important as ever. We support people to resolve their advice problems and change their lives for the better. We do this on a free, confidential and impartial basis by:

  • Providing advice and information services to support people in resolving the problems they face
  • Supporting the improvement of policies and practices that affect people’s lives both locally and nationally

For more information about CAML, please visit our website: https://www.caml.org.uk/

Community Engagement Volunteers

This a new volunteering role for the charity.  Although the Citizens Advice service has a fantastic reputation and name recognition, few people understand that each office is an independent charity and are dependent on funding to provide our vital services and support.  As a Community Engagement Volunteer you will:

  • Raise awareness of CAML as a charity and how people can support us
  • Liaise with local businesses to establish connections and potential sponsorship
  • Represent CAML at local events, e.g. hold a fundraising stall at the Christmas market
  • Support the development and implementation of fundraising events and initiatives
  • Be a member of CAML’s Fundraising Committee
  • Contribute to discussions on how to improve CAML’s wider fundraising strategy

CAML is a friendly and professional charity with a fantastic team of staff and volunteers.  Although a new role, CAML’s Fundraising committee successfully hosted CAML’s first Fundraising Week in September 2021 and is planning more for the future.  We are looking for 2 or 3 Community Engagement Volunteers to support us with this work going forward.  Membership of the Committee is fun and rewarding in equal measures!  The Committee meets quarterly, with Community Engagement Volunteers taking the lead on agreed community fundraising projects reporting to a CAML staff member.

Locations

This role will be based in our Mitcham office and involve travel to agreed community events in Merton and Lambeth.  The role is flexible but we suggest an average of half a day a week in the office.  The role will involve occasional weekend community events and activities (to be agreed in advance).

What we are looking for

First and foremost we’re looking for great communicators, who enjoy meeting people, organising and participating in events and wish to support CAML’s vital work in local communities.

You’ll need good organisation skills, be efficient and reliable. If you have great networks or prior community engagement / fundraising experience, fantastic, but don’t worry these are not pre-requisites.

Satisfactory references are required before joining the charity.

Volunteer Training and Support

On joining us, you’ll receive a one-day induction training session, covering an introduction to the charity, our services, community fundraising and the volunteering role you will be doing.  You’ll then receive ongoing support and development from your nominated CAML staff member and from Volunteering & Training Officer.

Commitment

We are looking for volunteers who are able to join the Charity for an average of half a day a week (more when a fundraising event or activity is taking place).

How to apply

If this volunteering role is of interest, we would be delighted to hear from you.  Please send the completed Application Form and Diversity Monitoring Form to volunteering@caml.org.uk by 6pm, Sunday 14th August 2022.  Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to meet with us and find out more about the role and the charity.
